The Stepford Wives was written by Ira Levin in 1972. Previous to this, Levin was well known for being the author of Rosemary's Baby. The difference between these two books by the same author is that while RB is quite a serious and scary horror, TSW takes on a more satirical look at a thriller. TSW was made into a film in 1975, this version of the film has become a cult classic in todays modern world. Embracing the science fiction and thriller elements of the story. The 2004 version of the film was disastrously panned by critics and viewers everywhere (apart from me, I quite enjoyed it). Three sequels have also been released in made-for-tv format: Revenge of The Stepford Wives, The Stepford Children and The Stepford Husbands. I have only seen the second of these sequels, the one about the children. TSW tells the story of Joanna and her family. They move into Stepford after deciding it was a nice place to bring up their family. A while after moving in, Joanna starts to notice that all the women in Stepford are a little too 'perfect'. They're perfectly dressed with immaculate make up. They all have exceptional bodies and are obsessed with housework. To the point where they do nothing else. |
The husbands of said women are all in the Men's Association. Joanna's husband starts off going to the Men's Association once or twice a week, but after a short period of time, he seems to be spending all of his spare time there. Joanna starts to wonder if things really are as simple as they seem. She gets drawn into a world that she doesn't understand.
As far as the story goes, as I have seen the films prior to reading the book, I did have a brief idea as to which way it was going to go. I felt that having seen the films spoilt the feelings I would have got from reading the book first. Other than that it was a really good read.
Standing at around 195 pages made for a quick read. The writing helped as it was very well written, easy to read.
